What's in an Archive?

Archival centres hold a Significant Amount of Valuable Genealogical Information.

Canadian: Archival Centres focuses on different archive categories and what you may find in their collections.

 What You Will Learn:

Beginning with an introduction to archival centres, you will learn the basics of what to expect for your visit. Archives have rules which often include what you can bring, what facilities are available, how to handle the documents, and reproduction and copyright of the records.

Library and Archives Canada is explored as well as Provincial, Regional, and Local Archives. Contact information for each provincial and territory archive is provided. You will also look at the history and contents of these archives.

The course continues with examining several other archival centres you may be able to access. These include university archives, religious or ethnic centres, and institutional archives. You will look at specific groups of records that may be found including land records, military records, maps, and school records. Non-paper archival materials such as sound archives hold recordings of interviews, stories, and songs is also discussed.

This course is included in the Canadian Records Certificate Program. It may also be taken as an elective or for personal interest.
