Colonial Ancestors

Discover the History of Colonial New England

There is a large volume of records available for researching Colonial New England that began with the earliest settlements beginning in 1620 when the Pilgrims landed until the United States government was formed in 1790. Both town and city clerks maintained records of births, marriages, and deaths in their communities. Many of these original records as well as other important documents have been transferred to microfilm and digital images which are available today.

What You Will Learn:

Beginning with a brief history of New England, you will explore many of the records and documents that have been preserved for each of the six states that form this area of the United States.

You will learn the basics of deciphering Colonial Handwriting, the changes made to the Gregorian calendar, as well as strategies for locating the many records available for your research.

Included in the many documents that will be discussed are town records, census and census substitutes, land records and maps, military, and religious records. You will look at specific religious groups in each of the colonies and how they were funded to support the ministers and churches. Court records including criminal cases, probate, and divorce petitions are included as well.

Each of the seven modules in the course contains several websites and recommends books to assist with your research.

This is an elective course that can be taken for personal interest or used towards any of our certificate programs.
