Paleography: Handwriting Studies for Genealogy
Handwritten manuscripts are a way of life in archival and genealogical research. Some are easy to read, some not so much. This lecture will introduce you to common types of hands from the late Middle Ages to modern times (1400s-1900s). Attendees will learn how to decipher letters, words, and abbreviations by creating their own “cheat” books for future research. Also, lists of resources will be given on where attendees can learn more, decipher foreign languages (including Latin), and they can gain extra practice will be provided.
Shannon Combs-Bennett is a Qualified Genealogist (QG) based in Northern Virginia, USA. She is an award-winning author who lectures in the United States and internationally on various genealogical subjects, from genetic genealogy to genealogical methodology. Shannon earned her BS in Biology with an emphasis in genetics from Indiana University and her MSc in Genealogical, Heraldic, and Paleographic Studies from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. Currently, she is a Ph.D. candidate in History and Genealogical Studies at the University of Strathclyde.
